Why this volume

The conversation started with a NAS for family photos, but the real "why" turned out to be video production. The Media/Active and Media/Archive split, the hybrid workflow where editing happens on the laptop and archive lives on the NAS โ€” these are the questions this volume answers.

What this volume covers

Volumes 1 and 2 built a NAS that's a great family system. Volume 3 is what happens when the family also creates content: YouTube videos, short films, family documentaries, vlogs, podcasts, screen recordings, edited home videos. The storage needs of a creator are different from a consumer. This volume covers:

The hybrid workflow

The single most important concept in this volume: the hybrid workflow. Edit on the laptop. Archive on the NAS. The laptop is fast, local, and disposable. The NAS is slow, network, and permanent.

Every chapter in this volume comes back to this principle. Active projects on the laptop. Finished projects on the NAS. The conversation was explicit: "this is one area where I'd advise a hybrid workflow."

What you'll know by the end

Engineering Note

The temptation with a creator's NAS is to over-invest in storage and under-invest in workflow. The right answer is usually: cheap archive on the NAS, fast scratch on the laptop, a clear process for moving projects between them. Storage is the easy part; workflow is the hard part.
